[ His silence unsettles her so much that she almost texts again, just in case. For as long as she's known Gary it's always been his silences that were the most dangerous, the most loaded weapons he had in his arsenal. Mako worries but waits — patient in all the ways that he isn't. She leans over her phone, leans so far that her hair almost brushes the screen as it sits idly dark. ]

They mean something to me.

[ Mako hadn't been given any goodbyes as a child and it had cut her so deep and so thoroughly that it had taken her years to accept and even longer to move past. Even now, there are times when she doesn't think she's completely over it. Gary knows that. ]

[It's an unsettling thing but he knows, he knows that they mean something to her. He knows about her, he knows what happened in the past, he knows why they would be important but other than that he doesn't want them, he just wants for her to come home and that's the point, that's what he means but he wont say it, never will. He's quiet again but not for as long this time.]

[ She spares him the argument because they both know it won't get them anywhere. But measures of success with regards to the Challenger Deep mission have nothing to do with Mako's survival. All that matters is delivery of the payload and the closure of the Breach. If she manages that and makes it on through to the other side then, good for her. But if she dies in the process, it Gipsy is lost and unrecoverable — that still counts as win.

But Mako knows that Gary would just as readily see the whole world crash and burn. None of it would matter (no, he'd tear it all down himself) if she never made it back out of the sea. ]

[ God, she knows. ]

[It's success either way, he knows she's good, he knows that she is capable and knows the risks. If she dies, she dies doing something she felt was right but if she is lost to him, Gary is lost unto himself and there is a disconnect. He becomes abandoned and he is left to spare her absence in his life. It's twisted, but he needs her to be standing, living, breathing when his plans slot into place. He needs her to come back because she has the key.

And he is locked away. He needs her to walk through those doors because--]

[ I will feels like an unkind thing to say even though Mako knows there's no other answer. She will go down to Challenger Deep and she and Raleigh will see the payload delivered either way. Failure in this is not an option. (She just can't promise that she'll come back.)

A long time passes when Mako says nothing. Then: ]

I miss you.

[ It feels like a weakness, admitting that. Rangers are meant to have the program, their jaeger and their copilot. That's meant to be enough. ]

[A lot can happen in fifteen minutes. It's a haze because it's a needle through the arm, it's not a pill to swallow. It's a breakdown, not something to bring back together. It's that and he's still upon his bed where they have left him and he's watching the light flicker from the phone where the battery blinks red. He's watching it and he's quiet and slowly he's reaching out.

And it's enough for him. It's better than goodbye.]
