He makes you sad with the crap he says.

[ He's not blind, he knows they're childhood friends and Mako would do anything for Chuck, but Raleigh also knows that Chuck can test even his father's patience, and teenagers?

They can be so casually violent with how they treat each other. Chuck is a shining example of it. ]

Sometimes he doesn't mean it.
[ But sometimes he does and Mako knows that, though sometimes there's truth to the things he says. In the end, it just makes her try harder, makes her reach further. He challenges her (her head and her heart and her body) and she wouldn't trade that for anything.

(Except maybe Raleigh, but she doesn't know how to hold those sorts of things in her own hands.)

I know. It's the other times that make me angry.

[ Raleigh likes to think that he's a gentleman. If not that, he likes to think he's a little more progressive than most of his peers, and actively tries to keep from the usual pitfalls that being a male adolescent often presents. So when Mako doesn't give him any indication that she wants to date, he doesn't press the issue; when she tells him no the first time, he endeavors not to have her tell him no a second time; when she makes it clear that she's not choosing either him or Chuck over the other, Raleigh tries his damnedest to get along with the other.

But it's difficult, because Chuck is a difficult boy, and Raleigh is the kind of persistent that doesn't budge - unstoppable force meeting immoveable object, that's them personified. That's how the three of them come together, and nothing pisses Raleigh off more than the way Chuck acts like he doesn't need any of them, like he doesn't care if he runs people over to get what he wants.

It ticks him off because Chuck is the kind of liar that Raleigh hates and he wishes it could be different, for Mako's sake. But Mako doesn't need a knight in shining armor, even if Raleigh wants nothing else than to be that for her. Raleigh doesn't know what he's supposed to do here. ]

It isn't worth being angry about.
[ She isn't worth it is more accurate but Mako sees precisely where that particular turn and phrase will lead the conversation eventual. Unlike Chuck, who seems to enjoy saying no as often and as enthusiastically as humanly possible, Mako isn't a fan of the word (and what she likes even less is having to say it to Raleigh). So she skips over that particular obstacle, going broad instead of leading them further down into the weeds.

She and Chuck and Raleigh were meant to be part of the same team, not bickering over things that — at least to Mako — weren't supposed to last until graduation. Once they found their copilots, things would change (and the assumption has always been that it would be Chuck and Mako in the conn-pod together; how wrong they'd been).
